Die Stoep is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it.
Die Stoep is an independent South African magazine project operated by Liam van der Merwe, based in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect personal information when you visit www.die-stoep.com(our “Site”). By using the Site you acknowledge this policy.
For privacy enquiries contact our Information Officer at: privacy@die-stoep.com
We collect personal information in two ways: passively, when you browse, and actively, when you give it to us (newsletter, quiz, lead form, email).
Passive (browsing):
Active (when you submit a form):
Under POPIA s.11, we process personal information only where we have a lawful basis. Ours are:
We share specific data with the following processors:

Several of the processors above operate outside South Africa (Vercel and Google in the United States; Brevo in France/EU; Taboola in the US/Israel). Under POPIA s.72, we transfer personal information outside the Republic only where the recipient is bound by binding corporate rules or a binding agreement that provides an adequate level of protection — or where you have consented.
Where applicable, we rely on European Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) for transfers to processors in jurisdictions without equivalent privacy law.
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA), you have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, email our Information Officer at privacy@die-stoep.com. We respond within 30 days, and free of charge for routine requests.
We retain personal information only for as long as it is needed:
We protect personal information with reasonable, appropriate technical and organisational measures (POPIA s.19), including TLS in transit, encrypted storage at rest with our processors, access controls, environment-variable secrets management, and principle-of-least-privilege access to production systems.
In the event of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify the Information Regulator and affected data subjects as required by POPIA s.22.
The Die Stoep quizzes assign you an “archetype” based on your answers using a transparent, deterministic scoring formula (described in plain language at the foot of every result page). The archetype is informational and editorial; it does not constitute financial, legal, medical or professional advice (POPIA s.71).
You may at any time request that we explain the result, recompute it with corrected inputs, or delete it. Email privacy@die-stoep.com.
Die Stoep is intended for adult readers. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. Newsletter signup, quiz email capture and lead-form submission all require the user to confirm they are 18 or over. If you believe a child has submitted personal information to us, email privacy@die-stoep.com and we will delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Material changes will be flagged by updating the “Last updated” date above and, where the change materially alters how we use your information, by re-prompting you for consent.
